HULL HOSPITAL CUP. LEEDS UNITED BEATEN BY HULL CITY

The game was very quiet in the early stages, although Armitage twice almost gave Leeds the lead. Poyntz also nearly beat Mercer, but later Hull had rather the better of it, but the smart keeping of Whalley prevented Hull scoring. Crawford played in surprising fashion, but none of his many centres were accurately utilised. Just on the interval Frew unnecessarily and illegally charged Mills, for which Hull were awarded a penalty, which Bleakley converted. Interval score:- Hull City 1 goal, Leeds United none.

The second half witnessed a keen struggle, with Leeds generally superior. Hull's defence was excellent, but eventually a great concerted forward movement allowed Armitage to equalise. Three minutes from the finish Collier did fine work, which ended in Mills recording a splendid goal. Result:- Hull City 2 goals, Leeds United 1 goal.

Teams:- Hull City: Mercer, goal; Lodge and Bell full-backs; Collier, Kitchen and Bleakley, half backs; Crawford, Coverdale, Mills, Flood and Hughes, forwards.

Leeds United: Whalley, goal; Duffield and Frew full backs; Sherwin, Hart and Baker, half backs; Mason, Poyntz, Armitage, Swan and Clark, forwards.

A CUP FOR THE TIGERS.

LEEDS UNITED BEATEN IN CHARITY MATCH.

(By "Mac")

The Tigers entertained Leeds United at Anlaby Road on Thursday evening, to decide who should hold the Hull Hospitals Cup for the season. In the home forward line, Hughes and Mills were included in the home side. Leeds had their strongest team out. The attendance was about 4,000. In the first minute Crawford broke away, and placed the ball past the back. Coverdale darted in, and seemed to be onside, but the whistle went and a good chance passed. When Mills was put in possession, he too was ruled offside. Hughes forced a corner off Duffield, and placed the ball across the goalmouth. Though several heads went up for it, the ball passed ouside the far post.

EXCITING PLAY

Exciting play in the Leeds quarters called forth all the energies of the Leeds defence. Duffield and Frew covered Whalley effectively, and the venue was changed to the home end by Hart following a throw-in near the half way line. Mercer had to field a long shot from Swann, and Bleakley turned defence into attack, Flood and Hughes carrying on the good work. Nothing tangible came of the movement, and a return visit to the home end tested Mercer. Swann was conspicuous for dashing play, and frequently troubled Lodge and Bell. Hughes and Flood engineered a movement, the winger putting the ball across the goal, Crawford taking a first-timer. Two minutes off half-time Mills was following up a pass from Kitchen, when Frew fouled him in the penalty area, and a spot kick was awarded, and BLEAKLEY scored.

In the second half, there were many minor accidents, and also several fouls, which caused play to be very scrappy. The Tigers kept up the speed but the ball was too much in the air to make the game interesting. The Leeds half backs were particularly successful in dealing with the home forwards. Hughes played very well, though Flood was injured midway through the half, and left the field for some time. On his return he was limping, and went to outside left, Hughes going inside.

SCORES EQUAL

Midway through the half Leeds equalised, slackness in the defence letting in ARMITAGE, who beat Mercer from ten yards range. Just when everybody was wondering whether extra-time would be played, a breakaway by Crawford took play to Whalley, and though the winger's shot was charged down the position was not lost, and Collier by a clever dribble, came right through the defence before passing to MILLS, who beat Whalley two minutes before time. so that both the home goals were got within two minutes of the whistle blowing. The winners were best served at half back, where Kitchen, Collier and Bleakley played good football. Swann was prominent in the Leeds side, and the team on the whole was well balanced, without being unduly clever.
